I saw the lineup for this year’s Coachella was just announced, which reminded me of the one time my wife and I were able to go in April 2013.
Here we are on the Ferris wheel just before Vampire Weekend hit the stage to play songs from Modern Vampires of the City a month before its release.
I’m smiling wide, but that’s about to change when someone in the car shifts their weight, sends it rocking, and a little too many beverages high five with the nausea fairy. Luckily, I was able to contain myself and see the set.
The lineup was epic. Among our favorites (aside from Vampire Weekend) were:
- Of Monsters and Men (who started just as we arrived on the first day)
- How to Destroy Angels (in one of their only performances ever)
- The Lumineers (at the height of their self-titled debut’s popularity)
- The Postal Service (on their Give Up 10th Anniversary tour)
- Band of Horses (our first of MANY times seeing them—best, most explosive performance of the weekend)
- Phoenix (well, except for their “special guest,” of course—all the buzz at the time suggested it would be Daft Punk, but instead we got…R. Kelly…) and
- Grizzly Bear (surrounded by lanterns, their flames swaying with every gust of wind).
This show and many others inspired 🤝”And Ever After”🤝 — OUT TOMORROW!
