The Story

Some songs just stick with you…The song that was playing during your first kiss…The song you blared at maximum volume in your first car every day on your way to school with all of your best buds singing along…The song you latched onto that got you through one of the hardest times in your life…

Often all it takes is the first few seconds of a song to edge that DeLorean past 88 miles per hour and transport you back to when it first took hold of you.

I’ve found this to be especially true about songs I’ve written myself. Although you’ve only seen a few Sadhouse Kiss songs released, there’s plenty I’ve written and recorded over the years, and every time I dig through old demos and recordings, it’s uncanny how much I vividly remember about the time in my life when I put pen to paper or hit “record.”

And if there’s one song from my past that I keep coming back to again and again, it’s “Thank You for Approving of My Coffee.” Originally written and recorded in 2005, it’s arguably the most “successful” song I’ve ever “released,” as measured by the tens of thousands of plays it got on MySpace when that was a thing, and by actually being asked by friends to perform it acoustically at various house parties at the time.

To quote “And Ever After,” another one of my songs, whenever I hear “Thank You for Approving of My Coffee,” I’m “remembering a simpler time” in my life—one when I was a couple years out of college, embarking on a new career, figuring out who the hell I was, and just starting to become best friends with my future wife (who I wouldn’t technically officially start dating until 2007, but that’s another story…).

While I absolutely adore the song itself, I’ve always felt like it could’ve been mixed better, especially since I’ve improved so much in that area over the years. So now that it’s a legal adult 19 years later, I decided to give that another shot, AND…

I’m SO excited to say that a brand new, completely re-mixed version of “Thank You for Approving of My Coffee” will be out May 17, 2024. Nothing was re-recorded—the drums, bass, guitars, and vocals are all the original 2005 takes. I will admit I’ve added a few tiny pieces of ear candy I’ve thought would be fun to include for almost two decades, but what you hear in the final version is essentially a collaboration between “2005 John’s” performance and “2024 John” finally fulfilling that original vision.

So come on back with me to the “Post-9/11” era of 2005, a time when MySpace was all the rage, when we were more concerned about Bird Flu than COVID-19, when the absolute coolest phone anyone could own was a BlackBerry, when George Lucas was still making Star Wars movies, and when no one had ever even imagined Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man.

It was a time when I felt like the littlest thing could change everything.

Even a cup of coffee.
